Internship Glow-Up

This blog post is long long over due but I’ve been procrastinating and life has been moving super fast.

Anyway I’m going to get straight into the tea girl.

On February 1st, I started an internship at this digital marketing agency. I was so excited I thought it would be a great experience to see the behind the scenes of a company. I thought it would be hands on and I would learn a lot of long term knowledge to use in my own career and personal life. Have you gotten my drift on “thought”?

Of course when I first started I was getting to know everyone, and I was getting adapted to the new environment. But wait let me tell you about the environment while it’s on my mind. They put the interns in this cubby hole with a desk and two bean bag chairs. This was the room where the intern went, where they had phone meetings, and what I found out later the hiding spot for people that didn’t want to be at their cubicle. Within my first week there I was in the cubby hole with one of the employees and he would just vent so much about how he hated his job. One, he didn’t know me so I felt really bad for the guy because for him to be venting like this to a intern I knew it had to be deep.  He talked about many things that we are not going to get into but it was all bad...nothing positive! He talked so much but I will never forget when he asked me if I was a butt kisser, and I said no (one that’s nasty, and two who do you think you are...?) He told me that the only way I would be able to stay there was if I was. As you can see he was right because look at me now😂🙌🏿 I’ve been delivered from that hell hole🔥.

Now let’s get to the broiling tea hunny Harvey & Son Cinnamon Spice☕️preferably. That’s that good good y’all check it out!

Okay so remember I told you that I started February 1st so I went through that whole month with no problems as well as March. In April, here is the start of my problems. It was told to me that pay day is on the 1st and 15th. I didn’t get paid so no worries probably an error we all make them. I’m sure that’s the case because it has never happened before. Cool, I talked to HR and it was fixed I got paid two days later.

It happens again on the 15th. Now it’s a problem, because you are unprofessional, unorganized and unconcerned. I sent an email to my “manager”, her manager, and HR. At this point it a concerning issue and somebody needs to know something because y’all cannot get it right. My email basically stated that I come in to work like everyone else and I do the task given to me like everyone else so why is it that I can’t get paid on time? In reply, I was told that they have to allocate payment to different people, there are factors that go into everything, this is something that could have been handled in person and as an intern, I should use it as a learning experience. Excuse me, only thing that I’ve learned is that you are unprofessional, unorganized and unconcerned. Also where were all these factors when you use to pay me on time? Oh yeah I was told it was a bank issue🤦🏿‍♀️... baby this is not my first job and I am far from a fool okcurrrr! Don’t blame Well Fargo because they always make sure the direct deposit hits💸. Also I was told intern payroll is entered in manually... okay so who is using their hands to put it in late?🔍

Now they say third time is a charm. Why did it happen again y’all? So again I type up my email and it was really professional but at this point I’m not playing! ( my money is never a game but you know what I mean girl). I told them I will be expecting a live paper check when I walk in the office #runmymoney. I get in the cubby hole to put down my stuff down as always and notice I don’t have a laptop anymore. Then someone comes in and says a new worker came so they gave it to her now, the employee I’m talking to is looking for a computer for me...ok. I go to my “manager” to ask if the check is ready, she say “go ask blank she’s HR” ( with an attitude) oh you mad? me to🤷🏿‍♀️. I get the check from HR. After that I work like it’s a normal day.

Here is the finale I hear from one of the employees that I’m the joke in the office group message. My “manager” was looking for some help in the office so she asked for help in the group message. ( they know I’m not there). The CFO (my managers manager) say “Make Zariah work for her money”, who do you think I am a prostitute? Like I said I'm not at work so I log in to see if it is still there... no he deleted it #howcoward!

In life you just have to know when your time has ended. It was at this moment when I knew it was time to go.

Even though this was funny, and at this point I’m sure you are like WHAT IN THE WORLD! Yeah sis I know but this is an experience I couldn’t go without sharing. In life we are all going to experience misfortune and being mistreated unfortunately. It comes with the territory especially in corporate.

Almost everyone at that place is miserable they hate their jobs and some are fearful of their manager. It was a very toxic place...one girl showed me a bald spot she has in the middle of her head and said it was from the stress of the job. Noooooo sis I need and want my edges!

Everything you need to know before getting a internship/job:

  1. Make sure there there is at least someone that looks like you or another minority because company culture and diversity is everything. It tells you A LOT about a company.

  2. Don’t settle for a job because you are desperate. The job needs what you can bring not the other way around.

  3. When you get into the job make sure you get all your paper work.

  4. Always ask questions and seek opportunity to learn more. (I didn’t learn anything from that job the CFO really just wanted someone to run social media for his furniture company)

  5. Keep a paper trail.

  6. Demand your respect!

  7. Finally, because you do #6 it doesn’t make you the “angry black women”. We are magic and they can’t handled that! What can you bring to the table? You Are The Table❤️

This is not a bash just my experience!

I am now at an amazing internship. I don’t get treated like just a intern. I was welcomed immediately and it’s a positive environment. I’ve learned so much, and people are willing to pour into me. There is company culture. I’m allowed to give my input and I am respected for it! I really have nothing to complain about. God removed me from that toxicity and I am so grateful!

I hope you enjoyed. Please share with someone that needs a laugh or someone you think that needs this!
